China has a lot of languages and dialects — 298 to be exact, according to Ethnologue. The languages spoken by China’s 56 recognized ethnic groups belong to at least nine different families, from the official languages (Standard Mandarin, Cantonese, English and Portuguese) to those spoken in China’s autonomous regions (Tibetan, Mongolian).
